FFA Week begins with presentation, cornhole cup
Future Farmers of America from Cobleskill-Richmondville and neighboring districts gathered at C-R High School on Monday, Feb. 24, to hear a presentation on careers in agriculture and then participate in the first annual Schoharie County Cornhole Cup Tournament.
The afternoon included a visit from the FFA’s National Eastern Region Vice President, all six of New York’s FFA officers as well as a member of the national FFA staff. C-R was one of only four districts in New York to receive a visit from the state and regional representatives.
During the afternoon, C-R’s FFA and agriculture students attended a presentation on "Leadership and Careers in Agriculture for the Future.”
“I think the presentation from the National FFA officer was very well-received,” said Deborah Fletcher, C-R’s agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. “We had about 50 students attend, with about 50 more from Schoharie, Berne-Knox-Westerlo and Sharon Springs. The officer talked for about 35 minutes, and the national and state officers got the crowd moving with some interactive games and questions.”
Afterward, students from all three districts competed in the first annual Schoharie County Corn Hole Cup Tournament, held in the C-R High School cafeteria.
“I think everyone had a great time,” Mrs. Fletcher said. “We had 26 teams from our four schools involved - so on to bigger and better next year!”
The event kicked off C-R’s festivities for FFA Week, which is celebrated by FFA chapters around the country. C-R’s FFA students will be having a “spirit week,” during which FFA students will be wearing something themed. For instance, Wednesday is “American Pride Day,” and Friday is “Flannel Friday.” FFA activities this week also include making soaps and lip balms using the beeswax from the FFA's honey project.
