Junior, Olivia VanEvera Advances to State SkillsUSA Competition

Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District is proud to recognize C-RHS junior Olivia VanEvera, who has earned the opportunity to compete at the New York State SkillsUSA competition later this month in Syracuse.
Olivia, a student in the Welding and Metal Fabrication program at Capital Region BOCES – Schoharie Campus, secured her place at the state level after winning a gold medal in the job interview event at the regional competition. She will now compete against top Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from across New York State from April 22–24 at the New York State Fairgrounds.
“I can’t wait. I feel it’s a great opportunity to express my interests and skills and really what I like to do,” Olivia shared.
The annual SkillsUSA competition brings together thousands of students to demonstrate their workplace skills across a wide range of events, including welding, healthcare, culinary arts, video game design, and job interviewing. Many state winners will go on to compete at the national level in Atlanta this June.
Olivia said her interest in the job interview competition was sparked by similar experiences at C-RHS through Future Farmers of America, where she discovered a passion for showcasing her skills and abilities.
“I feel it’s a great way to showcase what I have to offer,” she said.
One of approximately 10 female students in a program of about 100, Olivia has embraced the traditionally male-dominated field of welding. Her passion for the trade began at a young age, growing up on a farm and working with her hands.
“I have been interested in welding my whole life. I love the concept of it and working with my hands,” she said. “I got a welder for Christmas and I enjoy working on different projects around the farm.”
Looking ahead, Olivia plans to attend college to study animal sciences while also pursuing a mobile welding business and operating a cow showing facility.
Program leaders at Capital Region BOCES praised Olivia for her dedication and drive, noting her commitment to growth and her confidence in representing her region at the state level.
The Welding and Metal Fabrication program provides students with hands-on training aligned to American Welding Society standards, preparing them with the skills and certifications needed for careers in the welding industry.
The C-RCS community congratulates Olivia on this outstanding achievement and wishes her the best of luck at the state competition.
